Brief Description of Rila Monastery

The monastery of “Saint Ivan of Rila”, also known as Rila monastery is the largest monastery in Bulgaria. Its location is in the southwestern Rila Mountains in the deep valley of the Rilska River. The monastery is named after its founder, Hermit Ivan Rilski. Inside in the monastery there are Church, Residential Part, Tower and Museum.

Rila monastery was re-erected by a local feudal lord with the name of Hrelyu Dragovila in the 14th century. 

The main church was created in the middle of the 19th century. Its architect is Pavel Ioanov. The most precious items inside the church are gold plated iconostasis. They are famous with its wood carving, the creation of which took five years.



 

 

Brief Description of Blagoevgrad Town

Blagoevgrad is a town in Southwestern Bulgaria and a center of Province of Blagoevgrad. It is situated on the banks of Blagoevgradska Bistrica River and nearby the Valley of Struma River. The town of Blagoevgrad is located close to the mountains of Pirin and Rila. There is a famous mountain resort of Bodrost situated close to the city. One of the attractive sides of Blagoevgrad is the old quarter Varosha. There are located traditional old houses with give a great interest for the visitors and the citizens of this city.
